Travel tips

Return to nab.com.au

Before you take off, take a minute to read our travel tips. They’ll help alleviate any concerns you might have about travelling with cash, traveller’s chequesCash Passport and credit cards.

Keeping your travel money safe

  • Don't disclose your ATM PIN to anybody.
  • Don't sign any credit card vouchers unless the total at the bottom has been filled in.
  • Be very careful changing money with unlicensed people.
  • Keep your traveller’s cheques receipts separate from your traveller’s cheques, just in case your cheques are lost or stolen. You will need the receipt when making a claim to get your cheques refunded or replaced.
  • If you are using Cash Passport on your trip, you can use one card on a daily basis, and keep the other in a separate secure place. If a card is lost or stolen, you can then use the second to access your funds.
  • When using Cash Passport, you won’t need your passport as identification, so put it away somewhere safe.
  • Try to avoid carrying large amounts of cash. It helps if you take some smaller denomination traveller’s cheques with you and use ATMs where available.
  • If you are using traveller's cheques always carry some form of identification, such as your passport, driver's licence or credit card, as you may be requested to present identification when you cash them in.

Managing your travel money

  • Remember that you can use NAB Telephone Banking within Australia and internationally to transfer money from your NAB accounts to your NAB credit cards.
  • You can keep track of your Cash Passport funds by logging on to www.cashpassportcard.com.  At this website you can also find out the location of your nearest ATM, card balances, statements and change your PIN if desired.
  • If you run short of cash while you are away, you can top up your Cash Passport Card using BPAY®  via phone or Internet Banking or by visiting a NAB branch in Australia.
  • Familiarise yourself with how exchange rates work to avoid getting short changed. Our currency converter and foreign exchange calculator will help.

 Dealing with foreign currencies

  • Cash Passport is available in US Dollars, British Pounds, Euro and Australian Dollars, so you can take the currency that’s most appropriate for your travel destination.
  • Familiarise yourself with the look and feel of different denominations.
  • Keep all currency exchange receipts issued to you. They may be required under local laws for reconversion when you leave the country.
  • Take US traveller’s cheques with you to the USA. You'll find it very difficult to change other currency cheques.
