Moving home tips

Moving into a new home is exciting but there's also plenty to do in the process.

Leaving your old home
Have a clean out before the move – give away items to charities, if suitable or have a garage sale
Start clearing out the fridge and freezer a few days before you leave so food doesn’t go to waste
Insure your new home once you’ve signed the contract and update your home and contents insurance for your new home and check that you’re covered for the actual move to.
Disconnect the gas, electricity, water and telephone
Arrange for your mail to be redirected
Redirect or cancel other services like pay TV, newspaper delivery, gardener and similar
Packing and moving
Book a removalist, if you need one. Try to book a few weeks in advance.
Defrost the freezer the day before the move
Keep some essential items packed separately for fast and easy access when you get to your new home (e.g. toiletries, change of clothes, a few kitchen essentials, etc)
Pack valuables and important paperwork separately and keep them somewhere safe while you move
