Advice for International Students

NAB's recruitment policy

As at 1 February 2008, NAB does not employ anyone as permanent staff UNLESS they :

  • are an Australian or New Zealand citizen; OR
  • already hold Australian Permanent Residency.

We are not able to consider any candidate who is  in the process of applying for Permanent Residency.

How to prepare yourself for your graduate application (BEFORE you have been granted Permanent residency).

Preparation is the key.

  • Be active socially. Communication skills are a vital part of the skills sought by employers. Practice speaking in English in a range of settings. Practice mixing with people from a wide range of different cultures.
  • Read about the company – relate to it. Identify why NAB appeals to you.
  • Tap the internet. Make sure you read as widely as possible about NAB, in order to learn about what you are taking on!
  • Believe you have what it takes. Your experiences in coming to Australia, studying in Australia, succeeding in your studies are major achievements. Use these experiences as a point of difference, demonstrating your flexibility and adaptability.

Recruitment – Key challenges:

  • What is your brand? Applying for a job is a marketing exercise, and YOU are the product! You need to know what it is you are selling, and why the employer should take you on.
  • Your resume: Make sure your resume promotes your brand. If you are not sure about it, please consult your university Careers Service for advice.
  • Communication skills: Practise! Practise! Practise!
  • Stay positive. As an international student it may take you slightly longer to reach your goal, but don't get discouraged.
  • Be yourself. It is hard to keep pretending to be someone that you are not. You will be more successful if you are open and honest about yourself.

Taj's tip:

"You are special. You have shown the ability and capability to learn quickly. Support will be around you to advance you professionally…but do not expect a red carpet to be rolled out for you. On the contrary, be ready to roll out the carpet yourself!"
